Load times are the most obvious benefit — loading into a match, fast traveling across a large open world, or respawning after a death all happen noticeably faster on an SSD. Some newer games are built assuming fast storage and can stream in assets in ways that would stutter badly on a traditional hard drive.

Where it matters less

Once a game is fully loaded and running, storage speed has essentially no effect on frame rate or in-game performance — that's handled entirely by the CPU and GPU. A hard drive won't make gameplay itself choppier, it just makes the waiting moments longer.

  • NVMe drives are faster than SATA SSDs, but the real-world difference in game load times is often smaller than the specs suggest.
